Osheaga 2012: Interview With The Black Lips

The Black Lips rock out at Osheaga 2012 and bring something new to the festival.

Many musicians like to use the element of surprise in their live performances, and for the Black Lips, they always like to deal with the unexpected. Known for their crazy stunts and out-there antics, these four “flower punk” rockers definitely have fun up on stage.

Made up of Jared, Cole, Ian and Joe, the band is originally from Atlanta, Georgia. Although they are no strangers to Montreal, this was their first time at Osheaga and they were looking forward to coming back to a city that they love, as well as the poutine and smoked meat.

“There is a lot to like when it comes to music festivals but one of the best parts is the ‘family reunion aspect,’” says Jared. “You’re playing with bands that you’ve known forever and that’s the most fun part.”

“And the food at festivals is great,” adds Cole. “I ate like 40 oysters and I’m about to go eat 20 more.”

They performed on the Scenes D’Arbres (the Tree Stage) on day 2 of the festival and got the audience jumping around, with lots of crowd surfing as well.

So what spontaneity did they bring to the table for this performance? Well, from Cole puking on stage during the show (and continuing on as if nothing happened) to throwing drinks into the crowd, it looked like they were having a lot of fun. “We live every day like all hell’s about to break loose,” says Cole.
