To give our readers some background, when did you start designing and what made you want to be a part of the fashion industry?

Paria: I went to an arts high school and I basically designed costumes for the drama club because it was arts school for visual, dance, arts. So I got really into fashion from making costumes. I also did my first internship when I was seventeen at Joe for Kiosk. Ever since then, I went to college and university for fashion. I just really love the creative process and being able to make a garment and understand the design of it.

When designing your collection, what are some ideas that come to mind?

Paria: A lot of my pieces are tailored. I always like thinking of the garment and trying to determine how it will be the most flattering on a woman. For example, the simple lines that could help lengthen the body. Being able to make something that much more special by paying close attention and tweaking and refining it is important to me.

On your website, you mention that Paria Shirvani is built around signature essentials for the modern women on the go. What would you say is your signature essential?

Paria: Well, for example, I build pieces that you can dress up and dress down. They’re effortless and easy to style. I would say my signature essential would be a nice coat or throw-over.

What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a designer?

Paria: I think building the business and figuring out how to get customers. Doing trade shows and things like INLAND are great ways to get your name out there and make people know about your brand.

Do you have any advice for designers trying to make a name for their self in the industry?

Paria: Just to learn from other people who are in the industry. Intern as soon as possible. Learn from the mistakes of others and keep at it and be positive. You’re going to have great moments and challenging times, but if you love what you do, it will just keep getting better.
