Review: “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”

“Death lies before us as we sail to the fountain of youth.”

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Captain Jack Sparrow is back, and better than ever. In this fourth and latest installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean saga, Jack (Johnny Depp) finds himself aboard the ship of the much-feared pirate, Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and his daughter, Angelica (Penelope Cruz).

Rumours of a prophecy have surfaced, claiming that Blackbeard is doomed to meet his end at the hands of the “one-legged man.” So, he and Angelica–with Jack’s reluctant help–set sail to uncover the fountain of youth, in order to stop the prophecy from coming true.

But their path is laden with all sort of dangers: Spanish sailors, revenge-driven pirates, mindless zombies and, worst of all, mermaids (dun, dun, dun).

Here’s the run down:

Action: Seemingly the main purpose of any movie in the Pirates franchise–and this one does not disappoint when it comes to sword fights, explosions and unrealistic (but fun) stunts.

Humour: The other main element in this series, and Johnny Depp brings to the screen hilarious moment after hilarious moment. There are so many good one-liners in this film, it’ll keep you laughing the whole way through.

Romance: Always my favourite part. With the absence of the previous love story between Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley’s characters, Will and Elizabeth (who did not return for this fourth movie), there was a space to fill for this one. Watch out for a sweet–yet brief–romance between a mermaid and one unlikely sailor on board. Here’s hoping they will appear in the next Pirates movie!
