Scotty James Sets An Ambitious Goal: A Million Fans In 99 Days

With a huge sense of determination and an ambitious goal, Scotty James is taking the initiative to show the power of independent artists.

As a Canadian singer-songwriter, Scotty has been able to perform and release music without a record label, but he still battles with the obstacles of a struggling musician. He wants to show that indie artists can still make it big in the music industry, so he came up with an idea to get him one step closer.

His goal? Gain one million fans in 99 days with zero dollars. He’s going to produce tracks using programs such as GarageBand and use basic technology such as iPhones and camcorders to film and edit his music videos. He took on the challenge in hopes of getting the music industry’s attention and be “that little engine that could.” “We’re going to create our own marketing machine to make it happen on our own, just to prove that it can be done,” says Scotty.  “Anything can happen and anything is possible.”

It took a lot of sleepless nights and preparation, but the campaign finally got rolling. He officially kicked off his “#demolife of an Unsigned Billboard Musician” campaign on June 10th and he’s already released a series of seven songs as part of his Crayon Box Mixtape, with each song being named after a colour. This mixtape is available for free download to his fans online and he’s also released cover art and self-directed, self-produced music videos for each of his tracks.

This campaign came out of “desperation and a bit of anger” toward the big record labels, and he wants to get his voice out there to make a point. He’s come a long way since knocking on doors in Waterloo and selling CD’s on porches. With the help of his manager and the support of friends and family, Scotty has confidently put his name and music out into the world and is ready for the next step.

With around 18,000 Facebook fans so far in his on-growing fan base, he’s just getting started and showing no signs of slowing down.

“I want to inspire as many people as possible, not just musicians, but anyone trying to achieve a dream and follow their passion,” says Scotty. “I don’t want to sit around and wait for things to happen. I want to make things happen.”
