Totally Buzzworthy: MTV VMA Recap

From start to finish, the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards was full of moments that kept our newsfeeds buzzing. From endless twerking to a highly anticipated boy band reunion, Barclays Center in Brooklyn brought out all the celebs and was the place to be for all the excitement.

Lady Gaga kicked off the night with her latest single “Applause,” rocking multiple wigs and ending up in a revealing seashell bikini, which she stayed in for the duration of the show. Surprisingly, her performance wasn’t the most shocking.

Miley Cyrus showed the world that she has shed her Hannah Montana days for good. She performed her hit summer party anthem “We Can’t Stop” wearing a skimpy teddy bear suit while giant teddy bears danced behind her. After shedding the teddy bear onesie, Miley, now in a barely-there nude latex ensemble, was joined by Robin Thicke for a special rendition of “Blurred Lines.” This was when things got a little uncomfortable. Twerking was involved.

The reactions from the stars in the audience were priceless. From the Smith family to BFFs Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, jaws dropped and eyes went wide. It was definitely something that caused quite a stir.

The performance of the night though was the reunion of a group that had us fan-girling back in the ‘90s, before the days of One Direction.

Justin Timberlake, looking as sharp as always, came out and performed some of his old and new stuff, but we couldn’t help but think, Where’s *NSYNC?!

And then it happened. JT was joined by his fellow boy-band mates, and our inner teenage girls came out. Although the actual reunion portion of the performance seemed a bit short, it was still enough to satisfy all of us folks who grew up blasting “Bye Bye Bye” in our bedrooms.

It wasn’t all about the performances though. Some of the night’s award winners earned their first Moonmen, including Selena Gomez, who won Best Pop Video for “Come and Get It,” and Bruno Mars, who won Best Male Video for “Locked Out of Heaven.” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis came out on top with two awards: Best Hip Hop Video (“Can’t Hold Us”) and Best Video with a Social Message (“Same Love”).

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Mary Lambert shared the stage for a powerful performance of “Same Love“ and were even joined by Jennifer Hudson. Other performers included Kanye West and Canadian talent Drake.

Rihanna, One Direction, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Rita Ora and Daft Punk were just a few of the stars in the audience. Former Faze cover stars Ed Sheeran and Austin Mahone were also there for the party.

The evening ended with Katy Perry performing “Roar” on an outdoor stage in Brooklyn. Overall, this year’s show was a mixed bag of entertainment, and we’re left wondering what they’ll come up with next year!
