The online site Wattpad is a community where writers and readers converge—where there exists original fiction and elaborate fanfiction, which takes movies, shows, or stories like Harry Potter or Supernatural and reimagines them with different events and interactions between characters. Fanfiction as a subgenre allows fans to imagine different scenarios then the ones that took place in the original content.
Lets say you always envisioned Hermione and Draco ending up together—on Wattpad you’ll find tons of fanfics that have explored that relationship. Or maybe you’re looking for a crossover between Doctor Who and the Marvel universe—yes, it exists!
Wattpad is known for storytelling that’s updated frequently and written on-the-go. Many of the authors will post new chapters weekly and interact with the readers through the comments section and via news feed messages.
In a new anthology called Imagines, some of our favourite Wattpad authors have come together and written stories featuring well-known celebrities like Daniel Sharman, Rebel Wilson, Nick Bateman, Kim Kardashian, and many more. These particular stories are ones that not only explore scenarios with celebrities, but also feature you, the reader.
Imaginings (better known as imagines) are fanfics where you get to be a part of the adventure. The fanfics in this anthology are known as Real Person Fiction (RPFs), that feature real life people; often celebrities. “Imagine you’re running around the city, dodging paparazzi with Jennifer Lawerence…Imagine competing on a TV cooking show against Chris and Liam Hemsworth…Imagine selfies have been outlawed, making Kim Kardashian a freedom fighter who needs your help in bringing justice and good lighting to people…”
One of the beautiful aspects of Wattpad is that there are stories for everyone—as writers or readers, all stories can be explored and passions followed. As one Imagines author, Rebecca Sky put it, “I literally have a book in almost every genre on my profile…on Wattpad you have the flexibility to experiment and have fun and play.”
Readers can even occasionally have a say in what will happen throughout some of their favourite stories. Since many of the stories are updated and written chapter-by-chapter, there’s sometimes room for adjustments. Sky is one of the writers to have done this: “One of my books I wrote with my readers, so I let them vote on plot points.” That book even won a reader’s choice award. “Writing on Wattpad is really playful and lets you do stuff like this that you can’t really do normally.”
If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at writing, but have felt too nervous or self-conscious about it, Wattpad is a supportive community where all ideas are welcome. It “lets you experiment with your art and your voice,” says Sky.
Another Imagines author, Katrina Tonks, has also written across many genres and feels that the online writing community gives people the space and freedom to “learn to write creatively on the spot.” Since the nature of Wattpad stories are frequent chapter-by-chapter updates, you learn to bypass that inner critic who says your writing isn’t good enough and would have you stop before you ever really start. With Wattpad you can just keep moving forward and your writing becomes stronger and more stories are told.
