Parents tend to have a few go-to lines that we hear on the daily. However, we know that when it comes to our parents, they don’t always say exactly what they mean. Here are some famous parent lines decoded for your convenience.
“I’ll think about it”
Whatever it is you’re asking for, you’ve actually got a shot at getting it! There is a slight chance that with a bit of time and consideration, your parents might give you what you want.
“We’ll See”
Your behaviour for the next 24 hours is vital in their decision making process. Your parents are likely on the fence and if you can pass the behavioural test, you will be rewarded.
“Maybe”
Hearing “maybe” from your mom or dad might sound promising, but it’s not looking good. “Maybe” basically means, “I don’t have time to deal with the argument that will come if I say no, but I don’t want to give you too much hope.”
“Go ask your dad”
Your mom probably only says this if you have a strict father, as it is usually used when she doesn’t want to say no and be the bad guy, but she knows your dad will not allow it.
“Go ask your mom”
Your dad is most likely cool with whatever it is you’re asking for, but he doesn’t want to get in trouble from your mom later if his decision goes against hers. Basically he just wants reassurance it’s okay.
“When I was your age I would never do that”
This is a straight up lie. What they really mean is, “When I was your age I would have never got caught by my parents doing that.”
“Please don’t do that again”
You got busted, but it’s not too bad. Your parents are not happy, but you’ll get off with a warning.
“I can’t believe you did that”
Parents usually use this line when you’ve done something wrong, but they’re a little impressed, they just don’t want to admit it.
“I’m so mad at you”
This is where it starts getting dangerous. You’ve really done something bad.
“I’m disappointed in you”
The only thing worse than being lectured and yelled at for doing something bad is having your parents say they’re disappointed. They are not just angry, they are let down that you would do something like that.
“Dinner’s ready”
Have you ever had your parents call you for dinner, you respond immediately and are in the kitchen within seconds, only to be disappointed to find that dinner is not actually ready. When you hear “dinner is ready” give it a few minutes because they really mean, “dinner is almost ready.”
“I just need to grab a few things”
You’re driving in the car with your mom or dad and they decide there are some groceries they need for dinner. No big deal? WRONG! A few items can turn into a full length grocery trip really fast. You’ll likely be waiting in the car for at least 45 minutes.
“I’ll be there in 5 minutes”
If you’ve ever been the last kid picked up from a party, the only kid left at soccer practice, or stranded at school for an extra half hour, you’ve definitely heard this line a lot. What they really mean is it will take 5 minutes for them to just get ready to leave to pick you up. You’ll be waiting a while.
