Featuring DANNY FERNANDES

Danny Fernandes

You know Danny Fernandes… or at least you think you do. Consider the facts: the platinum-selling artist’s chart-topping 2008 debut Intro and its follow-up, 2010’s AutomaticLUV, generated 13 MMVA nominations and three wins, along with five #1 MuchMusic videos (three on MuchMore). His stylish videos have racked up over ten million YouTube views, while five of his singles have cracked pop radio’s Top 20, with two going Top 10. That includes the platinum-selling “Hit Me Up,” his fiery collaboration with Marianas Trench’s Josh Ramsay and fellow hit maker Belly, which topped iTunes’ R&B singles chart and MuchMusic’s Top 30 countdown. Live, the electrifying singer dancer has shared stages with the likes of Bruno Mars, Flo Rida, Akon and most recently Hedley in 2014.

But it’s time to flip the script on this accomplished pop artist from Toronto. For one thing, he isn’t doing “the dance thing” anymore. Instead, you’ll see him hitting stages worldwide this year with a full band and a show choreographed by So You Think You Can Dance Canada’s Luther Brown. Fernandes is also all about his own music these days. In fact, he wrote or co-wrote all 12 of the tracks on his third album Emotional, out this July.  “I can’t wait for you guys to hear it,” he says excitedly. Most importantly, the Juno-nominated Fernandes has given up on doing “a lot of things I shouldn’t have been doing.” The decision to pull back from the debauched lifestyle of a hot young club king may have saved his life in the end. “I was partying every night,” Fernandes says, “to the point where I was losing myself, and I almost literally lost my whole career.”

In a bid to stop his self-destruction, Danny Fernandes made a life changing decision to move to LA, and a city filled with inspiration. This choice may have saved Danny’s career as an artist. The first fruit of that year of labour in the City of Angels is, appropriately enough, “Fly Again (Broken Wings).” Centred on a hook borrowed from Mr. Mister’s ‘80s classic “Broken Wings,” Fernandes’ new hit single is a heartrending love song partly inspired by a broken engagement. Indeed, all of Emotional, he says, is “sad as shit. It’s a whole sad album about the past four years of my life.” If that sounds like a massive switch-up from club-bumping and gold-selling anthems “Fantasy” and “Private Dancer“, or his 2011 MMVA-winning “Automatic,” that’s because it is. Emotional proves that Fernandes has definitely—and defiantly—moved on, both musically and emotionally, from where he started out. “You can’t even compare,” he says, “It’s like night and day.” While Fernandes is not ashamed of his previous two albums—“they did what they did for me”—he is confident that Emotional is going to reintroduce him to both his fans and critics as a force to be reckoned with. “I don’t even think they are going to believe it’s me,” he says. “I can already tell by the release of “Broken Wings.” The reaction people are giving to it is like ‘where did this come from?’”

SPECIAL GUESTS FROM DEGRASSI

Luke Bilyk

Luke Bilyk

With numerous roles on television and a feature career on the horizon, Luke Bilyk is a young actor whose star is on the ascent. Born in North York, Ontario, Canada, Luke’s passion for acting began at the early age of five. Following that zeal for creating characters, Luke became best known for his role as “Drew Torres” on the iconic television series Degrassi: The Next Generation, where he was a fan favorite for five seasons. Luke followed up his run on Degrassi by flexing his dramatic muscles joining the Emmy Award winning Canadian series Lost Girl for two seasons. In the sci-fi drama, Luke played “Mark,” a character whose tough exterior belied a haunted past.

In Spring 2016, we will see Luke alongside Jason Priestley and Molly Ringwald in the half-hour single camera “tween” comedy series The Wonderful Wayneys created by Tom Saunders of Arrested Development and NewsRadio fame. Luke will play “Adam Wayney,” a sibling in the Wayney clan, nicknamed “The Wonderful Wayneys” for their good looks, Mensa level intelligence, creativity, athleticism and popularity. The busy actor will also be seen in 2016 on the big screen in the title role of the fantasy/thriller Adam’s Testament. Luke’s previous feature work includes the 2015 horror film Hellions which screened at both the prestigious Sundance and Toronto International Film Festivals.

Beyond the screen, Luke has wisely used his platform as a successful actor to tirelessly support the world renowned organization Free the Children. Luke has traveled to countries such as India, Haiti and Nicaragua where he aided in building schools and assisted with the construction of water filtration systems in the poorest regions of the countries. Luke is not only the youngest of four children, but also the only boy. His exotic good looks are the result of an Italian, Ukrainian and German background. In his free time, Luke indulges his love of sports by playing both hockey and soccer. Luke is also a proficient drummer.

Ana most recently starred in a feature film called Full Out, an inspirational sports drama. After nailing her first ever audition, Amanda was thrilled to find out that she had landed the role of Lola Pacini, a boy-crazed, candy-haired Latina. LIZ LOUGHREY

It must be the voice. Twenty year old classically-trained pop/soul vocalist Liz Loughrey (pronounced lockree) has been called many things—a youth prodigy, a musical savant, the future of vocal music. But one thing she hasn’t been called, is a singer who needs studio enhancements to help showcase her vocal prowess—which is nothing short of mesmerizing.“When I open up and sing a song, people listen. It’s something I’ve known for quite some time,” explains the buzz-worthy Toronto-based vocalist who counts Sade and Amy Winehouse as influences. What music scenesters who have seen her perform are beginning to notice is that despite her youth, Liz Loughrey has a genuinely old soul. “I’ve always gravitated towards the soul and jazz masters, from Aretha Franklin to Billie Holliday. I was always the only kid listening to that classic material and it’s filtered into my style, even to this day.” For this burgeoning vocal chanteuse, the plan has always been to record music for the music masses, driven by her massive voice. “Music has always been that higher calling for me. I’ve seen and done many things, but in the end, all roads always end right back at music. There’s never been a Plan B.”

SAM DRYSDALE

Sam_Rectangle

Sam Drysdale, winner of Slaight Music’s 4th annual “It’s Your Shot” contest, was raised in Guelph, Ontario, Canada, the son of musical parents who influenced him from an early age with everything from Bruce Springsteen to Pink Floyd to John Prine to Carole King. After graduating high school, he attended the Musician’s Institute in Los Angeles where he was immediately flagged as a “songwriter to watch.” His original music has already been cited numerous times by the Nashville Songwriter’s Association International and his debut EP “The Fight” features not one but two award-winning producers – Davor Jordanovski and Grammy winner Paul Brown. Sam Drysdale has been compared to artists such as Alex Clare, Ray La Montagne, and John Mayer. But the truth is, Sam is one of a kind—a unique artist with a unique voice and the ability to write mature, compelling, hooky songs that disguise his young age, 21. “The Fight” represents the absolute best of Sam thus far. Lyrically significant, brilliantly rendered and produced with the integrity of the song always at the forefront. These six songs showcase a powerhouse young talent on the verge of international acclaim…hopefully.
