Deciding to go to college is a big leap in the right direction in terms of your future. However, sometimes it isn’t easy to make a big decision that will forever impact the rest of your life, so when people don’t know what they want to study in college, that is a common occurrence. To help you make that decision, below is a list of tips for you to figure out what you want to major in, in college.

Think About What you Love to Do

Everyone has one thing that they like to do, and it could be a very simple and juvenile thing, but anywhere is a good start. For example, if you love to solve Rubix Cubes, you might think, well, how can I make a career out of solving Rubix Cubes? You don’t have to have a job in solving Rubix Cubes, but you can find aspects of what you like to do within Solving Rubix Cubes.

There are many pattern recognition and math skills that go along with the ability to solve Rubix Cubes, so finding a career path might not be as hard as you think. For example, you could study engineering or architecture and use those skills you love about solving Rubix Cubes in your everyday life.

Take a Career Assessment Quiz

If you can’t think of any one thing that you particularly love to do, then you may have a variety of skills. A great way to discover these skills is to take a career path assessment. These tests are very short and can give you a broad idea of what you might want to study.

These exams often get a lot of backlash for being inaccurate, but it is most definitely a great starting point for someone who has no idea what they want to study.

Don’t Worry About Money

If you are afraid to explore a field that you have a lot of interest in because you are worried about salary after college or not getting a job in that field, don’t worry about it. If you love to do something, you should pursue that as your career path. If you know the old cliché, “Find a job you love, never work a day in your life,” you know that the most important thing is that you are happy.

Don’t Be Afraid to Change your Major

If you have no clue what you want to do in college, but you take a whack at engineering, don’t go to a school that has very few majors other than engineering. That way, if you decide that you hate engineering, you can change your major, and there is no harm, no foul. However, going through the transfer portal can be a pain, so it is recommended that you go to a state school if you don’t know what your major is. You will find the most diverse portfolio of majors at different state schools.

If you can’t find anything at all after trying all of these strategies, you can always go to community college first. Even though there is a stigma about going to community college, getting an associate degree in accounting or other valued programs will set you up for many good majors at bigger schools for a much lower cost overall.
