Discovered in 1492 by Christopher Columbus, the Dominican Republic has since been explored by millions of visitors drawn to its year-round great weather, sandy beaches, natural beauty, and rich culture. In just over four hours from Toronto you can snap the perfect selfie as you sip chilled coconut water while the warm breeze off the Caribbean Sea gently wafts through your hair.
Faze had the chance to visit this island paradise and decided it’s definitely a destination to add to your must-visit bucket list.
Where We Stayed
El Embajador, A Royal Hideaway Hotel
Santo Domingo is one of the Caribbean’s oldest cities and the capital of the Dominican Republic. Not far from the heart of the cobble-stoned city, past buildings that date back to the 1500s, you’ll find the luxurious El Embajador, a Royal Hideaway Hotel.
If you’ve had your fill of the beach scene and you’re ready to take in the historic richness of the city’s cathedrals, or museums filled with medieval and Renaissance art, or maybe the Alcázar de Colón (the first castle in the Americas), then the El Embajador is the perfect home base.
Fully renovated in 2017, you can choose a room with views of the Caribbean Sea, the city or the lush, exotic garden that surrounds the hotel. Regardless of which view you decide on, you’ll be treated to a bright, avant-garde room with inviting beds that beg to be jumped on. Of course, rooms range from beautiful to next-level luxury!
Included: Free Wi-Fi, Luxury Acqua Di Parma™ and Bvlgari amenities (according to type of room), Smart HD TVs from 48”, Media Hub, iHome Alarm-Clock-Radio, Personal concierge service and a pillow menu.
At this point, we need to elaborate on the pillow menu. The El Embajador understands that getting a good night’s sleep is everything! With a selection that will entice you to try them all you’re sure to find the perfect pillow to rest your weary head after a full day of exploring. Selection includes: goose feather, hypo-allergic, convoluted foam orthopedic, zone cervical pillow and a butterfly-shaped cervical pillow.
Dining
If you’re a foodie, or just love good food, then the El Embajador won’t disappoint. You can enjoy sophisticated international cuisine at the El Jardin Gourmet Restaurant, or relax in the colonial setting of the Los Porches Restaurant where you’ll be treated to a Dominican or international buffet breakfast, as well as a delicious à-la-carte menu for lunch and dinner. And when you’re in the mood for cocktails and snacks while surrounded by tropical gardens, you can head over to the Las Cotorras Bar.

Bi Wellness & Spa
The word Bi originates from the language spoken by the Taino people of the Caribbean when Columbus landed on their shores, and symbolises life, new beginnings and well-being, so Bi Wellness & Spa is a fitting name for El Embajador’s retreat. Separated from the main hotel, it’s only a short walk along a garden pathway before you arrive at this self-contained, feel-good and look-great destination. The facility is designed to help you relax with a calming massage and sauna, or invigorate you with a yoga session or in the fitness studio. Housed in the same building, you can then get yourself ready for dinner or a night out at the salon with Ilonka.
Outdoor Space
You’ll be easily captivated by the natural beauty of the 12,000 square metres of tropical gardens that surround the El Embajador, so make sure you wander outside its haven to explore the outdoor spaces of the property.
Of course, you’ve got to start with the pool!
