If you’re not a board gamer but are curious about all the cool-looking board games out there now or have heard co-workers talking about them, it might be worth hosting a game night to find out for yourself.

The good news is, for a pretty small investment, you can buy board games online in Canada and enjoy hours of fun connecting with your friends. If it’s been a while since you last played a board game, the titles below are fan favourites that have brought hours of joy to gamers around the globe.

Wingspan

Wingspan was a 2019 breakout smash that took the world by storm and continues to be one of the best-selling board games on the market.

In Wingspan, up to five players play as bird enthusiasts, researchers, bird watchers, ornithologists, and collectors working to build up an ecosystem consisting of forest, grasslands and wetland environments into a bird-attracting haven. You do this by playing food tokens, laying eggs and drawing beautifully-illustrated birds from the deck. Strategically distribute birds throughout your preserve, and it quickly becomes a biodiversity engine that gains momentum and generates more and more points every round.

The player with the most points after four rounds of play wins.

The Mind

The Mind is a wildly popular two- to four-player cooperative card game where you work as a team to discard the numbered cards in ascending order – without telling each other, or hinting to each other, about the cards you are holding.

When a player thinks they have the lowest card, they play it and hope that nobody else has a lower card. If no one does, the round continues, but if someone has a lower card, players get rid of all cards in the discard pile, and the team loses one life. After playing multiple games with the same group, you might just be able to read each other’s minds!

Dream Crush

How well do you know your friends’ “types”? How well do they know yours? Choose a character to crush on and try to guess who your friends have caught feelings for. The game is played over five rounds, with a Milestone Card being revealed each round that turns up the heat from round to round. Pick a Crush to go on that milestone with and predict who the other players chose. The real fun begins when players have to reveal their guesses. Every accurate guess counts as a point, and the player with the most points after the five rounds wins the game and – and bragging rights.

Land vs Sea

Play in teams or head-to-head in this puzzle-board game hybrid perfectly suited for two players. Choose to represent the land or the sea as you and your opponent take turns placing double-sided hex tiles containing a mix of land and sea shapes to create a map. As you build the map, place your tiles strategically to complete the most areas of the map and try to prevent your opponent from completing theirs. Completed areas earn points, and the player with the most points when the last tile is played is master of land and sea, but not air.
