Inspired by artists like Rihanna, Lana Del Ray, Nicole Scherzinger, Carrie Underwood and Katy Perry, this dance-pop duo are ready to dance their ways into your hearts and ipod playlists.
I sat down with the fierce, talented sisters of HighDiamond upstairs before their performance at the Mod Club in downtown Toronto. The girls, Catina and Angela, are all done up, makeup on fleek and with their dancers practicing choreography in the hallway. We finally found a semi-quiet place to sit down and chat.

What inspired then name of your tour?
Angela: The “Rise Up” Tour comes from a place of always striving to be better and do better. It reflects us wanting to rise up to our own potential.
Does it get weird working together as sisters? What’s your creative process like?
Catina: It works really well because we know each other’s boundaries and we know how to talk to each other and communicate properly.
Angela: Yeah, I mean we have pretty different styles but there’s a pretty good balance between us both.
What’s the most stressful part about being on tour? Do you get nervous before you go onstage?
Angela: This part – the waiting. Catina actually gets really nervous…I just run through everything 50 billion times and my brain is constantly on until I walk off the stage ad we’re done.
Catina: See, I can’t do that – she drives me nuts (pointing towards her sister)! I’ll go through the routine once, then I’ll relax, and right before we go on I’ll go through it one more time. But I can’t go over it 50 million times like she does. I’ll freak myself out if I do that!
What was your passion first, singing or dancing?
Angela: Well we were put into dance first and then as we got older we started voice lessons.
Catina: But we’ve always loved both. If we weren’t dancing, we were singing.
What advice would you give to young girls who would one day hope to be in the position you guys are in?
Angela: Believe in yourself! Follow your heart but also take your brain with you.
Catina: And also assemble a really good team that you can trust, that’s a big one! It’s taken a while to get a strong team around us that we really trust. It’s been a rocky road. But now we feel that we have that.
How do you deal with any negativity that comes your way?
Catina: Ignore it! Dance it away! We actually wrote a song called “Dance It Away” that’s on our album. Put those negative comments in the back of your mind.
Angela: We’ve had negative experiences that personally, I’ve really learned from. And it’s like, I don’t regret that that happened, I’m glad I was put in that situation because I grew so much.
Catina: And as your going through that process know that you can’t dwell on what was said about you or done to you. We’re lucky ‘cause we get to lean on each other through this whole experience.
What’s next for HighDiamond?
Catina: Our self-titled album will be released this summer. We’re just really thinking about promoting our album after the tour! We’d love to do more shows, too.
Check out the ladies’ single Fabulous and keep an eye out for their self-titled album this summer!
A Special thank you to Jenelle Seelal for the great pictures of HighDiamond.
