How To Build A Skin Care Routine

We all know how important it is to take care of our skin to maintain a healthy, blemish-free and ageless glow. Being kind to your skin starts by providing it with the right balance of food, nutrients  and vitamins and staying well-hydrated from the inside. Then we need to take care of our skin from the outside. Our skin is happiest when we provide it with the care it needs on a regular, daily basis. Here are some suggestions on how to build the perfect skin care routine.

Know the skin you’re in

A combination of your DNA, your age, and your environment (think humid or dry) will determine the type of skin you’re dealing with. Keep in mind this can change with the seasons (e.g. dry winter skin). Decide if you have dry, normal or oily skin, as this will affect your routine, and the products you should be using. Also, younger skin (e.g. acne/blemish care) will require a slightly different approach than older skin (anti-wrinkle care). Lastly you’ll need to fine tune your routine and products if you have sensitive skin.

In the morning

CLEANSE: Start by washing your face with your choice of water or a cleanser to get rid of oil, dead skin and dirt your skin may have accumulated overnight, or any lingering traces of makeup from the night before.

TONE: Modern toners, selected for each skin type, can help you refresh, hydrate and rebalance skin. Research toners, many contain vitamins, herbal ingredients with anti-inflammatory properties, and ingredients such as hyaluronic acid that boost hydration and keep skin glowing.

BLEMISH CARE: If you’re dealing with an acne blemish, now’s the time to apply your acne-fighting product.

MOISTURE:  Moisturizing creams are recommended, for all skin types, year round. They prevent water loss throughout the day, and help boost the skin’s own protective oils. Eye creams in particular, help protect the thin and delicate skin around your eyes. If you have dark circles around your eyes you can find specific products to help brighten and refresh.

SUN PROTECTION: Sunscreen is the most important product you can apply, year-round, not just in the summer. Skin cancer is the number one threat to young women. Sunscreen also protects you from the damage from the sun over time that leads to wrinkles, and degradation in the texture of your skin. Apply a sunscreen of at least 30 SPF, ideally 30 minutes before your go outside.

At bedtime

In the evening, your first priority is to remove your makeup. Then you essentially repeat the steps of the morning routine, without the sun protection. Prep your skin for a good night’s sleep because that’s when the skin heals itself.

MAKEUP REMOVAL & CLEANSE: Start by removing your makeup, you can use a cleansing oil to focus on makeup removal, and then use a water-based cleanser or soap to remove the oil residue and other buildup from the day.  You can also include a specific exfoliant product step here as well.

TONE: Repeat the morning application of toner to balance the pH levels of the skin, nourish and prep it for your moisturizing creams and serums

BLEMISH CARE: Again, if you’re dealing with an acne, now’s the time to apply your nighttime acne-fighting product on any problem spots.

MOISTURIZE:  Think overnight spa treatment for your skin. You can use the same moisturizer you used during the day, or choose special products for your (hopefully) eight hour sleep. Remember that your skin really needs that sleep to repair itself, and giving it extra hydration and nutrients will make your skin very happy, both short and long term.
