Police have confirmed that one man is dead following an accident that they believe resulted from a high speed street racing incident on a major Toronto area highway.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reporting that 27-year-old Alizeb Mirza of Mississauga was driving westbound on Highway 401 near Dixie Road at 11:48 p.m. Monday night at high speed and lost control of his Lexus. The Lexus drove into the median ditch and rolled over. OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said Mirza was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car resulting in his fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses said that they saw the Lexus driving at high speed, possibly racing another vehicle. The other vehicle failed to remain at the scene of the crash.

Referring to the claims of street racing, Sgt. Schmidt said “We certainly believe that to be the case. We’re looking for any of the vehicles that were involved to come forward and speak to police to give us their perspective as to what’s going on.”
