Movie Review: Marvel’s The Avengers

Some assembly required

Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), the director of the spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D., is busy working on harnessing the power of the Tesseract, an energy source with an infinity of possibility. But exiled Norse god Loki (Tom Hiddleston)–brother of Thor (Chris Hemsworth)–comes in and steals the Tesseract and uses its power to bring in an army from another world to bring the inhabitants of Earth to their knees.

Facing almost certain destruction, Earth has one last hope: the Avengers. Nick Fury must bring together this group of extraordinary individuals–Thor, The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.)–as well as some extraordinatry agents–Black Widow/Agent Natasha Romanov (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye/Agent Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner)–and unite them as one team.

But each one of them is a hero in their own story; can they learn to trust each other and stand together in order to save the world?

Here’s the run down:

Action: There isn’t a moment without some action! While lots is always going on, it doesn’t come across over down. Those familiar with the Marvel super heroes will LOVE seeing them go head to head, both with each other and with their common foe.

Drama: Trying to save the world? Well, let’s just say that comes with its fair share of drama. The super heroes struggle to get along–which is only natural, I suppose, knowing they have to share the spotlight when usually they are each the only shining stars on screen. Also, check out some romantic tension going on between Agents Romanov and Barton (Hawkeye).

Humour: You wouldn’t think this would be a category checked off for a super hero movie, but if you’ve ever seen any of director Joss Whedon’s other stuff, you’ll know he is great at delivering the perfect amount of comic relief at just the right time. The theatre was in stitches…when they weren’t on the edge of their seat with all the action!
