During this past year, there is one particular movie that every Marvel fanatic has been patiently anticipating. Since the release of Infinity War last year, Marvel also released Captain Marvel and Ant-Man and the Wasp. However, the hype was by far incomparable to the finale that everyone is sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for: Avengers: Endgame.

“No spoilers”! We hear this over and over when a Game of Thrones episode comes out. The same applies to Avengers: Endgame. So we promise that there will be no spoilers in this article. However, we must say that if you have yet to watch Infinity Wars, then please do not continue reading. Endgame is the sequel and its plot details will spoil Infinity War.

If you’ve never been on a rollercoaster before, well now is your chance to go on one very emotional ride. This action film is filled with bits of comedy and romance all rolled into three hours of tears and laughter. After the events in Infinity War, Thor, Captain America, Bruce Banner (aka. The Hulk) and Black Widow are the remaining Avengers after Thanos vanquished half of earth’s population. Together they must face an epic final showdown against Thanos as they fight to bring back their beloved allies.

Here’s the Rundown

Storytelling

It’s hard to believe that it has been over a decade since, Iron Man, the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film was released. If you’ve been keeping up with the Marvel series, you would have witnessed Tony Stark assemble his first suit back in 2008. You would also remember that Thor fell in love with Jane Foster back in 2011. Lastly, who could forget the groundbreaking Black Panther that introduced us to Wakanda in 2018. That being said, Endgame does significantly rely on the viewer having a clear understanding of previous storylines and character backgrounds. The movie does an exceptional job of tying all of the various storylines together and making sure that viewers are not left with any loose ends.

Love and friendship

Throughout all of the Marvel series, we witness our favourite heroes epically saving cities from havoc and defeating wicked villains. But in Endgame, we see a more human side behind the masks and superpowers. We witness the relationships the heroes have with their lovers and families. We get to see how all of the allies grew to love one another while saving the world together. On the other hand, fans have also witnessed the development of their on-screen heroes over the past decade. Even Chris Evans said during the film’s premiere, “I don’t know about you, but I cried like six times.” Be prepared for one very emotional ride.

Female representation

In recent years, Marvel has done a “marvelous” job with representation. Particularly, in Endgame we witness multiple female heroines all joining forces to defeat Thanos. There is a drastic improvement with female representation in comparison to the previous films in the franchise. Back in 2012, The Avengers only featured one prominent female character, Black Widow. Without a doubt, many of the other films have been focused primarily on a male lead, such as Thor and Captain America.

In Endgame, we have female characters all playing a larger role in the development of the series. Particularly, Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) have more on-screen time as powerful heroines. It is also noted that “the poster for Endgame features Nebula, Black Widow, Captain Marvel and Okoye side by side and smack-bang in the centre.” Although Marvel has mainly focused on male heroes in the past, this seems to be another step in the right direction.

Here’s a tip: To fully appreciate the film, be sure to catch up on all of the previous Marvel movies. From Ant-man to Captain Marvel, an understanding of each major character’s background will give you the full experience.

All in all, the film is definitely worth all of the hype that has been boiling over online and in the news. Now the big question is, will we see Marvel release any more films related to the Avengers? Or does this signify the end to an era of this collection of superheroes dominating box offices around the world?
