If you want to become a writer, you don’t have to wait for your first big break. You can make your own!
Starting your own blog is actually a lot easier than you think it is. However, launching a good blog takes time and it’s something you will work on every single day.
But where do you start?
Step 1: Find Your Niche
What do you want to write about? It’s best to start with a specific area that you can focus in on.
Maybe you know a lot about dance, or sports, or math, or cosmetics, or history. If you’re passionate about something, chances are good that someone else will want to read what you have to say about it.
Think about what type of writer you want to be in the future and start building your portfolio in that particular area. Want to be a journalist? Start covering local events and take your own pictures. Want to be a sports reporter? Start writing your hot takes on the Blue Jays and Raptors today.
Step 2: Pick a Platform and a Host
Now, into the technical stuff, that’s actually pretty easy.
The first thing you need is a blogging platform. The most popular one is WordPress, but there are other options. However, WordPress pretty much has the most support and the most free templates.
Next, you will need someone to host this blog. You will find that website hosting plans in Canada are actually pretty cheap. You can get a domain (e.g. YourAwesomeSite.com) and an email address (you@YourAwesomeSite.com) for less than you expect.
Step 3: Pick a Theme
How do you want your blog to look? There are literally thousands of blog themes out there and many of them are free. Your blog platform will most likely offer tons to choose from. Customize them with your own images and finishing touches, but don’t get hung up on it looking perfect just yet. A lot of people get stalled obsessing over perfection at this stage.
Step 4: Start Writing
Now that all of that administrative work is done, now you can do the fun stuff. Write and write and write. Then take a break and write some more. The more you do, the sharper and more distinct your voice will become.
You don’t have to write every day. But in the first few months, you may be so excited and inspired that you will want to.
Step 5: Get the Picture
Images are a really underrated part of your blog. Statistics prove that readers are more likely to click on a blog if it has an interesting image.
You probably don’t have thousands of dollars to pay for a stock photography account, so we recommend using amazing free image sites like:
You can also add some professional-design-studio-level touches by creating a free account at Canva.
The rest is up to you! Lots of people talk about starting their own blog, but very few people have the motivation to follow through and do the dang thing. Setting up your own blog will instantly take you from a dreamer to a doer, and start you on your path to become a famous writer.
