After a successful duology of Pillars of Eternity, Obsidian Entertainment has released a striking homage to its Fallout: New Vegas. The references were noticeable both in the visuals and in the RPG mechanics, as there were many different ways to go through it. Do you want to rush along the alien prairie with a powerful cannon and extinguish everyone? It’s easy, but this path is less interesting than deceit, the ability to chatter interlocutors, break into safes, steal items, and engage in a profitable trade. Moreover, the shooter mechanics were the weakest in The Outer Worlds. The weapon felt bad, and there was nearly 0 ballistics at all.

I have repeatedly met the opinion on the Web, which said something like that: “now Microsoft will throw money at the guys from Obsidian, budgets will grow, and new DLCs will offer us a unique experience”. Naturally, this did not happen: the reuse of objects and models from the original game are noticeable, and there are no new gameplay mechanics what so ever. At the same time, you do not feel a lack of content, the variability in the quests has been preserved, and the old characters are better revealed and are always ready to weigh a couple of phrases about what is happening. So, this DLC is like a double-edged sword. On the one hand, you have a jackpot prize, on the other waste of time. But, let’s take a closer look at the Peril on Gorgon DLC.

Danger on the Gorgon

At first, the player is faced with a misunderstanding: how to start the DLC? First, you need to close the original story quest Radio Silence on the Monarch, after which, Orson Shaw will send you a parcel with someone’s severed limb.

Next begins a detective story in the best traditions of the genre. Wilhelmina Ambrose contacts you to find the artifact she needs, which can be obtained exclusively on the Gorgon. Once an expedition headed by her mother flew to the asteroid, scientists conducted research there. But the connection was mysteriously interrupted, and our help was needed to find out the reasons. It turned out that the local corporation Spacer’s Choice was engaged in the development of some strange technologies for military needs. Why were the residents evacuated in a hurry, some of them died, and a huge number of looters and thugs of all stripes spread around? The truth surpasses the wildest guesses, the outcome is excellent.

At the first docking with the asteroid, it seems that the location is small, and you will be able to complete it in an hour or two. However, it took almost 7 hours to complete Peril on Gorgon DLC, which is pretty neat for DLC. For trying to get to the bottom of the truth, you risk losing not only your limb. Raging mercenaries, a high crime rate, and the general oppressive atmosphere on the Gorgon asteroid captivate. The locations are designed in contrast to the planets encountered in the original campaign.

A change of scenery

The vast location is teeming with hostile creatures that are not disposed to talk. Therefore, the plot information is presented in the format of audio logs. They are recorded with high quality, listen to in one breath, and sometimes turn into horror storytelling about the last hours, minutes, and moments of the life of members of the scientific complex.

The maximum level of the protagonist has been increased to 33, plus a couple of skills have been added. Old skills can be upgraded to the rank of Virtuoso. The environment is well drawn. When you study the exteriors and read the terminals, you immediately understand what kind of toughness happened here before you appeared. In communication with your companions, new dialogue threads have appeared, allowing you to find out about their attitude to what is happening. And individual tasks, if the skill is pumped, can be passed by logic and intuition.

There are also new weapons, and they have unpredictable effects. For example, repulsive shells have appeared, useful if the enemy is somewhere on the upper tier, and there is a gaping abyss behind him. Or a burning flamethrower that can be enhanced with modifications.

Peril on Gorgon’s main problem is the placement of the episode somewhere in the middle of the main campaign. The detective is isolated, but in the end, we get an analog of Mass Effect 3, where many DLCs assumed a replay of the entire story. Newcomers can wait for the full edition of the game in the future (including a second addon called Murder on Eridanos, announced for 2021), but gamers who have already completed the original campaign a couple of times will hardly want to go all the way to Monarch planet to start new story arc. I don’t know, in my opinion, such a placement of the DLC’s stories is a gambling game, which someone may like, but the others don’t.

Conclusion

An excellent additional chapter of The Outer Worlds, for which the authors are not ashamed to add a little bit of controversy. If you haven’t played The Outer Worlds yet, it’s time to fly into it with this DLC. Or wait for other DLCs coming later this year. Overall, if you like the original Outer Worlds or Fallout New Vegas – The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon will become one of your favorite games.
