What We Would Tell Our 16-Year-Old Self If We Had The Chance

If you could go back in time and talk to the 16-year-old version of you, what would you say? It’s a simple, but difficult question to answer. Being a teenager can be tough. There’s so much to learn and do and honestly, it can get a little overwhelming. But, being a teenager is a part of life that everyone goes through and you can make the most out of your teenage years. Those are the years when you’re suppose to make some mistakes, get into a little trouble, and make memories that will last a lifetime. But hey, we can’t be young forever! I talked to a few ladies and asked them to go back in time and think about what they’d say to their 16-year-old self, these are their responses:

I would tell her not to fall in love too easily because it’s not what you should be looking for at 16. Focus on yourself and your dreams, and build the confidence needed for your future self in the real world. I would also tell her to have fun and cherish your good memories as a kid because you’ll miss those times when high school is over. – Rhayelle C, 20

Being skinny used to make me so unhappy and looking back it was mainly because others made me think it was a problem. I even asked my doctor if it was possible to get fat pills. Being 20 now, I can say I’m much happier with my weight. So, I would tell my 16-year-old self that as long as you’re healthy and happy with yourself, the opinions of others don’t matter. You’re beautiful and fine the way you are. Don’t spend time worrying about what others think of you. – Kayla M, 20

I would tell my 16-year-old self to focus more on what you personally think about yourself, rather than what others think. I would also tell myself that even grade 9 and 10 marks matter. Even when times get tough and you feel like giving up, things will eventually get better you just have to give it time. – Monica G, 18

I would tell my 16-year-old self to keep making mistakes–don’t be hard on yourself for trying and failing. Be proud. Although whatever you tried may not have paid off in the moment, or you may not have gotten what you wanted after you worked hard for it, you will always learn a valuable lesson that will make you wiser. Wisdom arises out of failure.” – Rebekah A, 20

Stay in school and get the best education you can because with a good education the sky’s the limit. I made the mistake of not continuing my education and because of that I did not get the job that I wanted. Always follow your dreams. – Valerie H, 50

I would tell her to save all her Christmas money. I just told myself I could save later on because I’m so young but honestly, you can never be too young to save! My last piece of advice to her would be to be humble because it’s so important. – Jessica B, 20

I would say to her to work a lot harder because being sexy is being smart. Be who you are and don’t feel like you have to justify that to anyone. Fall in love with yourself before you try and fall in love with someone else.” – Chiderah S, 20

I would start by saying, “Melissa, being a young mom is the least of your problems and the best gift you have been blessed with.” Learn to love yourself and enjoy life. People’s opinions of you mean nothing. Develop friendships that are meaningful and yes; you will only get more beautiful as you get older. And lastly, the mistakes you make now, will only enhance your future and develop your charisma and drive in life, so hold your head up, and keep pushing because you are on the right path to a beautiful journey. – Melissa R

Nothing lasts forever. Acknowledge this fact and make every moment count. – Hanna R, 20

I would tell my 16-year-old self that there is more to cooking than just making macaroni and cheese, your high school boyfriend will not look so hot when he grows out his patchy beard and if you wake up with quarters in your bra and hot sauce in your hair, you’ve had a good night. – Charlotte M, 22
