Most of us dream of flawless glowing skin but there are constantly new products hitting the shelves and tons of skin care advice. no matter where you look, there is always a new serum or potion or lotion that’s coming out, so you should consider what you know about your skin, what you know about the market, and what it means to have good skin. The best type of skin isn’t always poor, free and completely flawless, because for some people, completely flawless isn’t attainable.
You might already know the basics for skin care, such as claims, tone, moisturize, hydrate, sleep. But there is so much in between that you have to consider. What if you have a skin condition that requires Bodewell’s Eczema Cream? What if you haven’t seen the dermatologist in a while and you’ve noticed changes happening in your skin that aren’t normal? What if you simply have adult acne and you don’t know how to get rid of it and nothing you’re doing is working? You want to do what you can for your skin because your skin is going to take the brunt of the world around you. Let’s take a look at some of the things that you can do to make sure that you are looking after your skin in the best possible way.
Always choose the correct cleanser
There are different cleanses out there for different skin types. If your skin is oily or prone to acne, you might consider a salicylic gel or a benzoyl peroxide wash. If your skin is dry then you might use a moisturizing glycolic or a Milky cleanser instead. Some people deal with melasma post pregnancy, and if you’re one of them then you may use a brightening wash to help to brighten your skin. Usually, this is an alpha hydroxy acid cleanser. As long as you are using the correct cleanser, your skin is going to thank you and it’s going to look brighter and better than ever.
Give your skin the time of day
Believe it or not, one of the most common ingredients you need for your skin is time. You need the time to cleanse, to tone, to moisturize. You need time to put on a face mask and time to use your blackhead cleanser. It can be harsh on the skin too, leaving the dirt to build up, and each time you scrub it clean is just going to leave your pause wide open for more bacteria. You need to build this routine and keep it consistent if you want your skin to look great.
Ignore 90% of the product advice out there
You do not need to have more than 10 products in your bathroom simply for your face. When you layer on too many skin care products you’re going to end up putting a harsh stamp on your skin which results in far more breakouts and clogged pores than you ever hope to see. Too many products are just going to be heavy on your skin, they may be too fragranced, and they can just make your skin end up breaking out.
Moisturizer will be your best friend
when it comes to products, moisturizer is the best thing you need. You should be moisturizing your skin after a shower as standard, but moisturizing day and night is vital. The best time to moisturize your skin is right after you get out of the shower and right before you go to bed, you should always avoid the heavier lotions that have fragrances and make sure that you find a gentle moisturizer for everyday use. The last thing you want is a moisturizer that’s going to make your skin bright red or pink.
Stop touching your face
You may have had this advice repeatedly while COVID was rampant around the world, and it’s good advice. Where do you put your hands through the day? You don’t think about it, and that’s the case for everybody. We use door handles and shopping trolleys and laptops and tables, we go to the bathroom, we wash our hands in different fragrances, we eat foods and open packaging, we cook. These are just some of the ways we use our hands and we do it without thinking. All of the bacteria and dirt that you might collect in doing all of these things get transferred to your skin. This can lead to bacteria being in your face and breakouts occuring which can lead to scarring and massive increase in wrinkles. It doesn’t have to be that way though, and all of this bacteria can also lead to illnesses like flu or the cold.
Make sure that you are well hydrated
It may sound like skin care basics, but we are talking about hydration inside and outside your body. If you have a lack of water, you will have less radiance and far more sag in your skin. When you choose your products for your skin, you need to choose those that have hydrating formulas. Drinking around 8 glasses of water a day is also going to help your skin to be bright and shiny and that’s what you want it to be, although not exactly shiny it’s just a metaphor. Hydrate your body with good products and make sure you drink plenty of water so that you are approaching it from both ends.
Where possible, keep your face out of direct sunlight
Wearing a hat with a wide brim made, and staying away from heaters and fireplaces is a good idea. Too much heat exposure can cause inflammation and a breakdown of your collagen in your skin. Next time you’re roasting chestnuts or sitting close to a fire, remember this and take a step back. When you are out with friends or sunning yourself, make sure that you keep your face in the shade as much as you can.
Don’t forget to exfoliate
Did you know that we lose at least 50 million skin cells per day? If you don’t give them that nudge, they can hang around and it makes your skin look dull. Choosing an exfoliating solution that is pH neutral is extremely important. Don’t just stop with your face though, all of your skin needs to be foliated on the skin on your body deserves that treat.
Don’t forget products with vitamins
We can talk until the sun goes down about having a balanced diet, but you need to give your skin some vitamins from the outside. Much in the same way you would hydrate on the inside and the outside, it is important Because your skin is going to glow. You want to consider how you repair the skin from sun damage, and a vitamin C serum can really help. The best time to apply any vitamins to your skin is right after you cleanse it so that your skin can really soak it in. You can even layer it underneath your sunscreen for added protection.
Speaking of sunscreen
When you go out of the house, you need to remember to put sunscreen on any exposed body parts. It doesn’t matter if the day looks overcast or gray, because it’s the UV that’s the problem, not necessarily the brightness of the sun. Wearing sunscreen every single day as part of your regular morning routine is going to get you set up for having glowing beautiful skin for life rather than skin that is packed with Melanoma and other issues. Speak to your dermatologist about your skin if you were nervous about which sunscreens you should be using.
Keep up with a healthy diet
Your skin has a natural barrier which helps you to retain moisture. For this to be effective, you need to have Omega-3’s in your diet. This is a fatty acid that will help you to hold onto moisture and if you pair this with a diet that is low in foods with a high glycemic index, you’re going to see those effects on your skin.
Don’t forget to clean your brushes
When you are applying makeup, the brushes that you use need to be cleaned properly and regularly. You want to fight infection and avoid any clogging in your pause, so concealer and foundation brushes should be washed at least once a week. Any brushes that you use around your eyes should be washed twice a month, and once a month is a good idea for any other types of brushes. It doesn’t have to be a big job, it could take 5 minutes, but once it’s done you will thank yourself later!
Change up your pillowcases
As much as you need to clean your brushes, you need to make sure that you are changing your pillowcases. Your faces on these from the moment you go to bed to the moment you wake up, and a lot of bacteria from your skin can transfer onto your pillow. Keeping up with the cleansing routine for your face is a lovely idea, but if you are going to then sleep on a dirty pillowcase is probably not the best thing to do.
