Movie Review: True Grit Starring Hailee Steinfeld

“Punishment comes one way or another.”

True Grit hailee steinfeld

Starring Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross, True Grit tells the story of one girl bent on seeing her father’s killer brought to justice. Though just 14 years old, Mattie speaks with authority and assurance–sure of what she wants and how she needs to work to get it. She hires trigger-happy Deputy U.S. Marshall Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) to find Tom Chaney (who shot her father for two gold pieces) because she heard him described as having “true grit.” But there is one condition: he must take Mattie along with him on the hunt.

Also on the hunt is Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon), who is after Tom Chaney for his own reasons. Though they resist it, all three must work together to bring down the man responsible for a wave of crime across the countryside.

Here’s the run down on True Grit:

Action: More than a few good showdowns in this one!

Adventure: Westerns like this one take place before the trains had reached all the way across the country, so it’s a perfect background for all kinds of adventure in the untamed lands of the U.S.

Girl Power: Now, I’ve seen most of the classic western movies, but this one stands out from all the others because of one character: Mattie. In a genre usually dominated by males (and if females appear, they are shown as weak characters, who most likely get caught in a crossfire), it is refreshing to see a girl with spunk who can hold her own in the Wild Wild West. You’ll find yourself rooting for her the whole way through!
