8 Ways To Infuse Your Home With Positive Energy

Have you ever noticed that the space you’re occupying can have a profound effect on your state of mind? Visualize yourself in a cluttered room with piles of dusty old magazines, and Bankers Boxes filled with outdated documents, towering towards the ceiling. Mildewy white sheets cover the furniture, a layer of grime lines the windows, and cobwebs triangulate across every corner. How do you feel?

Now, instead visualize yourself on a wide open beach, or in a forest, or on a riverbank. Feel different? Like you can breathe again? Imagine the ability to bring the outdoors in, and imbibe that sunshine, as well as the fresh air within the confines of our homes, even in the winter. That would be a home abounding with positive energy. The dusty, mildewy one? That one would be teeming with negative energy, trapped in every nook, cranny, and cobweb.

How can we infuse our homes with positive energy, and keep negative energy at bay? Here are some helpful tips.

Invite Space and Movement

What if, instead of tasking yourself with the chore of decluttering, you granted yourself the opportunity to create space? Either making space for something new, or creating space to promote air flow and positive energy. And it can feel good to donate unwanted items to someone who may be in greater need of them than you are.

In the process of creating space, you are also creating movement. Our inner world tends to be reflected in our outer world, so especially if you feel stuck in a rut, moving items around your home is a symbol of embracing change. This prevents stagnation in both our internal and external lives.

Removing unwanted items from our home can also expose how much “stuff” we’ve purchased and accumulated. In the documentary “Less is Now”, T.K. Coleman, director of the Foundation for Economic Education, said, “The best way to know if you have too many things isn’t by waiting to see if you run out of room to keep them, but asking yourself if you’ve run out of purposeful things to do with them.”

Purify the Air with Woods and Herbs

The Indigenous practice of smudging has become well-known, most commonly in terms of burning dried sage, to purify the air in our homes. There is, in fact, scientific evidence that burning certain woods and herbs has an anti-microbial effect. A 2008 study published by the Journal of Ethnopharmacology concluded that medicinal smoke produced by burning havan samagri (a varying mixture of spices, seeds, ghee, roots and woods) reduced aerial bacterial counts by 94% for a duration of 24 hours.

Another material used for smudging is palo santo, which, in addition to attracting positive energy, is also said to act as a mood booster, creativity enhancer, and method to improve sleep quality.

Add Fragrance

The ambience of a room can be greatly affected by scent. Overpowering cooking odours or, even worse, those caused by rotting food, can certainly detract from a harmonious atmosphere. Counteract these odours, or simply bring fresh fragrance to any room, through aromatherapy. A diffuser with essential oils may be used for this purpose, or scented candles. A  bouquet of fresh flowers can also emit a fresh scent while adding beauty and a touch of nature to your home. Another option is to simmer lemon slides in water to neutralize kitchen odours.

Open the Windows

Opening windows by even an inch lets negative energy out and draws positive energy in. Fresh air improves energy flow and clears stagnation, especially through cross-ventilation or the use of fans in the home.

Ensure windows are clean to encourage the influx of natural light. This is even more important in the wintertime, though the lack of sunlight can be offset by using light boxes or lamps. Himalayan salt lamps emit a warm, comforting glow, and are also claimed to improve overall well-being.

Bathe in Sound

The concept of a sound bath, an experience that involves immersing oneself in highly resonant sounds (often from singing bowls), was shown to lower anxiety, pain, and even heart rate, in a 2018 study published in Anesthesiology Research and Practice. This effect can be achieved around the house by hanging windchimes, or simply by playing positive frequency videos on YouTube as background music.

Introduce Feng Shui Principles

The translation for Feng Shui is “wind-water”, and it is an ancient Chinese practice of interior design. A key principle of Feng Shui is bringing natural elements from the outdoors inside. One way that Feng Shui teaches the encouragement of energy flow (chi) in the home is through the careful placement of furniture and accessories, which harmonizes the balance between yin and yang energies.

If it isn’t within your budget to hire a Feng Shui consultant, there are easy, inexpensive ways to introduce Feng Shui principles into your home. Installing mirrors on the wall, keeping bathroom doors shut, removing shoes at the door, and adding houseplants can all augment chi. In particular, peace lilies (Spathiphyllum wallisii), according to The Indoor Nursery, maintain positive energy in the living room, and are also said to improve financial abundance!

Spiritual Cleansing

Certain religions conduct a ritual led by a religious leader upon moving into a new home, to bring blessings and peace to the space. For other cases, where a traumatic event has taken place in the home (or even a suspected haunting), paranormal experts (Call Ghostbusters!) can be hired to sweep the home of any prevailing negative spirits.

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing technique. Reiki practitioners are taught to cleanse the space in which they practice before the treatment of each patient, as any negative energy present can hamper the effectiveness of the treatment. Inviting Reiki into your home via a practitioner or Reiki-infused products can promote positivity within your space, by way of spiritual cleansing.

Disinvite Negative Energy

Keeping negative energy out of the home is as important as bringing positive energy in. Avoid toxins and pollutants. If you’re burning candles, you may want to choose those made from soy or beeswax. Paraffin wax, most commonly used in household candles, is a by-product of the petroleum industry, and one study by South Carolina State University found that paraffin wax candles emit benzene, a known carcinogen, when burned.

Black paint has been said to absorb negative energy. This theory maintains that painting a door or doorframe, placing a dark-coloured doormat or cast-iron urns on the porch can all keep negative energy from entering through your front door.

Negative energy in the home can cause everything from headaches and chronic fatigue, to sleep disturbances and nightmares. Regularly cleansing and purifying your home (also known as “energetic hygiene”) will promote positivity and raise the energetic vibration of your home, while potentially contributing to positive events in the outer aspects of your life as well. Infusing your home with positive energy has the power to bring peace, relaxation, and clarity to you and your household.
