The American Dream. Work hard enough and you can make anything out of yourself that you want. It’s not a possibility for many people in the world so it’s no wonder they are trying to get into the US.

These days, it is very difficult to come to America no matter how hard a worker you are. There is a very narrow set of criteria that you have to meet in order to qualify to live and work in the US and get a green card.

If it has been your dream to emigrate to the United States, then you’ll need to start working on putting the pieces together to have a fighting chance to eventually see your dream through.

Here are some ways that you can come to the US and try your hand at achieving the American Dream.

1 – Get a work visa

The H-1B is a US Work Visa. But not just any work visa. You can’t come to the US with an H-1B and work as a waitress.

This is a skilled worker visa in which there is a shortage in the US. These types of jobs are highly specialized and require somebody with a certain skill set that is hard to find.

They are all temporary visas, however. They can be continually renewed up to six times, but in many cases a green card can be obtained within that time if your company decides to sponsor you rather than risk seeing you go back to your own country and need to be replaced.

The key is to either have a specialized degree or work experience or start out on a path towards acquiring that.

Typically, these types of jobs are in the STEM fields. So, science, technology, engineering and medicine. If you are interested in software and data, then becoming a data scientist will put you on a good path towards this visa. Likewise, a researcher in the field of medicine. There typically is a shortage of women in these STEM related roles, so coming to the US as a woman with this background will really help you get that visa.

2 – Study in the US

If you are only just starting your studies, then you should look into doing your degree in the US so you may end up staying here one day when you have graduated.

If you do pursue a STEM degree, then the US is an ideal place to learn as it is the home of universities like MIT and Stanford.

There are limitations with this visa. For instance, you can’t work more than 20 hours per week while you study so you’ll need to make sure you have enough money to live. Not only that, but university in the US is notoriously expensive.

3 – Come as an entrepreneur

If you have $500,000 to invest, you can apply for a green card right away. As long as you open a business with the money that will employ Americans then the process is very straightforward. It may seem like a lot of money, but entry into the American market is a very big deal and can be very lucrative.
