More Games Are Being Designed Specifically For The Female Market

It’s official. Girl power has arrived in the world of online gaming. The media might still like to portray gamers as male teenage losers, but in truth, this image is as 1980s as spandex and shoulder pads. The latest market statistics show that the biggest demographic among gamers is actually women in their 30s.

Among market researchers and statisticians, this is not headline news. In fact, they have been telling us about it for five years or more. The biggest change, however, is in the game development studios, a world that still has more than a passing whiff of the men’s locker room, and where developers are finally starting to sit up and take notice of who their biggest customers really are. So what games are most popular among the biggest gaming demographic of all? Let’s really stir things up by assessing three traditionally male-dominated game sectors.

Action role play – Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn

The first misconception to get out of the way is that girls like to play games that involve matching gems or growing virtual carrots, while boys like shooting things. Action RPGs are popular among both sexes, and Horizon Zero Dawn provides a worthy protagonist for female gamers. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic future and Aloy is on a mission to discover her past, while kicking some serious robot ass along the way. The game has sold over 10 million copies, placing it right up there among the top PS4 games ever.

Slots – Starburst

According to apocryphal legend, the original slot machines in Vegas were installed to keep the ladies amused while their husbands were busy losing all their money at poker and blackjack. What goes around comes around, and in the online era, women are just as likely as men to be checking out for some free spins on the reels. There have been numerous games designed squarely at the female market, but if you find the Barbie styling of Golden Goddess or Lucky Lady’s Charm just a little nauseating, there are plenty of others to choose from. The most popular slots game among both sexes is actually Starburst, a game that has been around since 2012 and shows that for some types of games, keeping it simple is the recipe for long-term success.

MOBA – Honour of Kings

Some might argue that the MOBAs are the last male stronghold in gaming, and it is true that the biggest names in eSport are male. However, this is another tide that could be turning.  Mobile eSport is gaining a higher profile with each passing year, as mobile tech improves, and it will be on a par with desktop and console sooner rather than later. Honour of Kings is played by 200 million people around the world, and astonishingly, 54 percent of them are women. Compare that with League of Legends, which has the second highest proportion of women players at a mere 35 percent and you can see just how popular Honour of Kings has become among female gamers.
