A Thorough Guide To Setting And Smashing Your Fitness Goals

One of the most satisfying things you can ever do is reach your fitness goals. However, most people don’t end up reaching their fitness goals for one reason or another. A lot of the time, this is down to the fact that they didn’t carefully set their goals in a way that allowed them to reach them. The specific goals you set and how you set them can have a huge impact on what you actually achieve.

Below, you’ll find a thorough guide on setting and smashing your fitness goals so you can finally get to where you want to be!

#1 Set Just One Goal At A Time

Setting just one goal at a time will help you to see that what you’re doing is manageable, and stick to it. If you want to completely overhaul your life and tell yourself you’re going to start drinking 2 litres of water a day, get 8 hours of sleep, and workout for an hour every day, you’re probably going to stumble at some point. Don’t attempt to do too much at once. Pick the goal that’s most important to you right now and go with that instead.

#2 Make Your Goals Measurable, Specific, And Time Bound

Having a measurable goals means you can track your progress, and when you do that you don’t have to do any guesswork as to whether what you’re doing is working. The more specific your goal, the clearer your path to success. For example, saying you would like to be stronger is great, but it’s a little vague. What does being stronger mean to you? Doing 10 full pull ups? Being as specific as possible will help you to measure your goals. Making it time bound means giving it a timeframe such as the end of the year or in three months time. This can give your goal a sense of urgency and will help you to develop a plan this will enable you to meet your goals. Setting goals like this in the future will do you the world of good.

#3 Start Small

You don’t have to give yourself a huge goal to start with, like running a 10k. You at least need to have confidence that this is going to be a goal you can complete. Measure it by making sure you’re at least 9 out of 10 on the confidence scale that you can achieve the goal.

#4 Know What Your Why Is

Knowing your why will make it so much easier to keep going every day. Most people want to ‘look good’, but this isn’t really a strong enough reason to keep going. This is the reason most people end up giving up after a short amount of time! Having a strong why is a must. Maybe you want to watch your grandkids grow up, or be fit enough to play with your own kids. Maybe you want to positively impact your mental health. What is the most motivating ‘why’ you can come up with?

#5 Make Sure You Enjoy What You’re Doing

If you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, no matter how effective it’s supposed to be, you won’t stick to it. Pure and simple! Enjoying what you’re doing is absolutely key. You need to find a fitness regime and way of life that you get excited about and actually want to stick to. Bear in mind that what you want to do may change over time, and that’s fine. Changing things up will keep things interesting.

#6 Invest In High Quality Clothes, Accessories, And Equipment

Don’t think that investing in high quality workout clothes, accessories, and equipment will help you smash your fitness goals alone. If you haven’t already got the motivation and you’re not already in a good routine, then it’s unlikely these things are going to help you to do that. However, if you do already have a pretty good routine, these things could help you to enhance your workouts. If you’re looking to get into boxing, consider new, quality boxing equipment for beginners to make your experience more enjoyable – otherwise, you’ll find yourself wearing sweaty, smelly gloves that many other people have worn! Take your time when it comes to buying equipment, whatever you may be buying it for. You don’t want to be the person with ‘all the gear but no idea.’

#7 Stay Flexible

You might think you’re going to head to the gym 5 times a week every week at first, and you might manage it for a while. However, staying flexible is important. You won’t always be able to have a week that is as productive as the last. Accept it. The less stressed you are with your routine, the better you will do over time.

#8 Never Compare Yourself

You can’t compare your first chapter to somebody else’s chapter 10. Don’t compare yourself, and unfollow any accounts on social media that make you feel negatively about your own journey.

#9 Find Ways To Track Your Progress

Tracking your progress will help you to see how far you’ve come. Take pictures, and take your measurements. You could even keep a journal – you should start to see that your outlook is changing with regular exercise!

#10 Keep Yourself Accountable

Keeping yourself accountable can be tough. You could get a personal trainer, or even a reputable online trainer to help keep you on track. You could ask a buddy to help you, or join a support group. Having people to cheer you on, and people with similar goals will help you to stay focused. Just remember that it’s normal to skip a workout every now and again, and you definitely shouldn’t beat yourself up for eating a slice of cake or a piece of chocolate every so often. This journey is not about perfection, it’s about consistency!

Hopefully, you now have a better idea of how to set and smash your fitness goals. Leave your thoughts below!
