Movie Review: Oz The Great And Powerful

The land you know. The story you don’t.

Oz the Great and Powerful

Oscar Diggs (James Franco), known as “Oz,” parades around the travelling circus like he’s a great and powerful big deal. He knows how to put on a good show–for his audience and for the people in his real life–but he is really just desperate for success.

So, when a Kansas Tornado whisks him away to the Land of Oz, he thinks this may be his shot. Especially knowing everyone believes him to be the one prophesied to come, the great Wizard of Oz, and save the citizens of Oz from the Wicked Witch.

But then he meets three different witches: Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams). So who is good? Who is evil?

Even if he can figure out who is the real Wicked Witch, how can he keep up the act that he is a great and powerful wizard when all he really has are a few parlour tricks and illusions?

Great and Powerful Oz

Here’s the run down:

Fantasy: The special effects are constant in this film, in order to create the wonderful world of Oz. From the landscape Oz first encounters, to the fanciful characters he meets along the way, be prepared to suspend your disbelief for a couple of hours.

Romance: No spoilers about who ends up together, but Oz is quite the charmer.

Humour: Look for great one-liners from characters Finley the Flying Monkey (Zach Braff) and China Girl (Joey King).
