Are you searching for a unique travel destination that won’t break the bank? Do you dream of experiencing a Mediterranean summer without the crowds? Consider the small yet beautiful European country of Slovenia!
This diverse nation shares the languages, events, and traditions of Italy, Germany, and Croatia, in addition to its unique Slovenian culture. Stretching from the shores of the Adriatic Sea to the peaks of the Julian Alps, Slovenia offers numerous attractions to explore.
Ljubljana

Ljubljana, the stunning capital of Slovenia, is located almost perfectly in the centre of the country, making it an ideal starting point for any traveller. A mere 45-minute bus ride from the Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, the city centre boasts world-class restaurants, incredible architecture, and more. Top sights include Preseren Square, Saint Nicholas’ Cathedral (Stolnica Sv Nikolaja), Ljubljana Castle, Metelkova, the Museum of Modern Art, Gallery SLOART, and Central Market, the perfect spot for local snacks, produce, and artwork. Don’t miss Mesarski Most, a pedestrian bridge adorned with padlocks and stunning statues. A walking tour is a great way to orient yourself in a new city; there are many reputable companies that offer tours through the city, some even include a wine tasting at the end!
Lake Bled

Perhaps the most well-known of all Slovenia’s attractions, Lake Bled is a spectacular sight. The lake itself is encircled by a walking path, with hiking trails branching off the southwest side; the view from Ojstrica is breathtaking! The picturesque island in the lake features the Assumption of Mary Church, where you can ring the historic wishing bell. The island is accessible by Pletna, a traditional boat, for 18 Euros (cash only). Overlooking the lake is Bled Castle, perched on a tall hill on the northern shore. The castle is a great place to stop for a snack; try a traditional treat like Kremna Rezina, a cream cake (also known as Cremeschnitte) or Prekmurje layer cake (Prekmurska Gibanica).
Caves in Slovenia

Slovenia is home to numerous caves; the most well-known include Postojna, Skocjan, and Cross. Located in the southwestern region of Slovenia, these three cave systems each offer unique experiences. Among them, Postojna stands out for its accessibility via public transit. This vast cave system welcomes all visitors, with a small passenger train transporting guests into the heart of the caverns. Even better, for only 1 Euro, a shuttle will take you from the caves to the nearby Predjama Castle, an 800-year-old castle built into the cliffside.
Pro tip: book your cave tour early, as they limit the number of visitors allowed in the caves to preserve the pathways and air quality.

Mountaineering, skiing, hiking, and caving are all popular sports in Slovenia; in fact, mountaineering is the most popular sporting activity in the country. Try walking the trails of the stunning Triglav National Park, climbing in the Julian Alps, or skiing at Cerkno Ski Resort. My personal favourite hike was Vintgar Gorge; the one-way path into the gorge follows the turquoise blue waters of Radovna Valley, culminating in a stunning waterfall and train crossing. You can choose one of two trails to find your way back out; these are slightly more challenging, making this attraction not suitable for everyone.

Perhaps sun-tanning and wine-tasting are more your style?
Don’t worry—if the idea of skiing and mountaineering sounds more like work than a vacation, consider heading south towards Slovenia’s Adriatic Coast. Slovenia is renowned for its ancient grapevines and world-class wine. Most recently, the winery Radgonske Gorice released “Untouched by Light,” a sparkling wine produced entirely in the dark. It pairs well with a boat tour of the islands along the coast, or so I’ve heard.

Begin your journey in Koper, the largest coastal city. A quick stroll through the narrow streets will lead you to the 54-metre high Bell Tower in Tito Square, offering views of the northern mountains and the blue coastline. Koper also boasts some of the best shopping in the country, including the shopping centre Planet Koper and cute outlets like House of Dreamz. Continue south to the pristine pebble beaches of Izola and enjoy a breezy cliffside walk to Park Strunjan. This park is a haven for incredible wildlife, including rare birds and towering 80-meter cliffs (watch your step!). Finally, unwind in the Venetian-inspired town of Piran. Here, you can learn about the salt pans and indulge in thalassotherapy at the Lepa Vida Spa.

Slovenia is one of the safest countries for solo female travellers; with an almost equal number of men and women in the country, and high rankings in sustainability and child safety, it’s no wonder this country is quickly becoming a top travel destination. Ready to plan your trip?
Slovenia shares the climate of northern Italy, meaning that tourist season begins in May, picks up in July with hot beachy weather, and continues into September and October. Consider booking for late May or early June, when the weather warms up but the most popular attractions are not yet busy, or September, when the ocean is still warm but the weather is balmier. Whenever you decide to go, you’re sure to have a fantastic experience in this beautiful, diverse country!
