Charli XCX pumps up the crowd and starts off Osheaga 2012 on a high note.

Kicking off the huge line-up of talented Osheaga performers, UK artist Charli XCX brought her dark-pop style and girl power antics to the ‘Scene de la Montagne’ stage on day one of the highly anticipated Montreal music festival in Parc Jean-Drapeau.

Rocking leopard leggings, a crop-top and platform sneakers, Charli XCX is all about the revival of the 90s, even mentioning that if the Spice Girls ever needed another member, she would be the perfect fit. “If they had one more, it would be grunge spice and that would be me,” says Charli. “Grunge spice sounds a bit ugly though, like she’s been hit in the face with a brick wall, so I would probably find a better name.”

Performing her hit tracks “Nuclear Seasons” and “Stay Away” for a fresh Canadian crowd, Charli XCX took to the stage full of energy. She brings together hip-hop beats with darker melodies, putting a twist on your average pop song.

Coming from a background in warehouse raves, this gothic pop princess has taken her music to the next level. She toured with fellow Osheaga performer Santigold earlier this year and is currently touring with Coldplay, which has been a dream come true for this newly turned 20-year-old.

One of her most memorable tour experiences was meeting Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin.“I met him on a flight by accident. First of all I told him that my main goal in life was to be a rapper and I was just like, ‘What am I saying?!’ And then I went on to invite him to his own after party and he was like, ‘I’s my show,’” she says.“It was so embarrassing. That was not cool.”

Inspired by female power-houses such as Björk, Kate Bush and Gwen Stefani, Charli XCX admires independence and is paving her own path in the music industry.  “I like people who are control freaks because that means they’re really good at their jobs,” she says. “I’m all for girls doing their own thing and not feeling like they have to try to be sexy.”

Charli XCX has been working hard to get her music out there and is making her voice heard. She just released her mixtape “Heartbreaks and Earthquakes” which can be downloaded for free online and she’ll be putting out another one later this year. She will be continuing on tour with Coldplay, as well as her own headlining tour, working towards next year’s release of her debut record.
