One Woman’s Journey Into The Cold Depths With Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi Cold Water Diver Alexia Krizia La Palerma

Adventure often begins with a single decision. For Alexia Krizia La Palerma, a freediver, creative director, and mother, that decision was to embark on a journey that combined her passion for exploration with the responsibilities of parenthood. Accompanied by her 14-month-old son, Leone, Alexia set out from Montreal in a , aiming to dive beneath the frozen surface of Flintkote Quarry in Thetford Mines, Quebec .

The Road to Discovery

The drive from Montreal to Thetford Mines is more than just a route; it’s a transition from the familiar to the unknown. Along the way, Alexia and Leone experienced the comfort and reliability of the Outlander PHEV, which provided ample space for their gear and a smooth ride through snowy landscapes. The vehicle’s Super All-Wheel Control system ensured stability and control, even on icy roads.

Their first stop was the Bubble Hotel at Centre de l’Hêtre in Lac-Beauport, an eco-conscious retreat nestled in the forest. Sleeping under the stars in a transparent dome, they found a moment of tranquility before the challenges ahead.

Preparing for the Dive

Freediving, especially in cold water, demands meticulous preparation. Alexia, holding a CMAS Level 3 certification, packed essential equipment, including a buoy with a 40m descent line, a Cressi Nano mask, a 5mm Elios wetsuit, and soft Leaderfins. Safety measures were paramount, with items like an emergency oxygen mask and a dive watch included in her gear .

Upon reaching Flintkote Quarry, the duo faced the task of creating an entry point into the ice. Using an auger and ice saw, they carved a triangle-shaped hole, allowing sunlight to penetrate the depths below. This natural light would guide Alexia during her descent.

The Dive: A Moment of Clarity

Descending into the icy waters, Alexia experienced a profound sense of stillness. The cold enveloped her, but so did a sense of clarity and purpose. Time seemed to slow as she connected with the environment, her breath, and her inner self. This dive wasn’t just a physical challenge; it was a testament to her commitment to living fully and intentionally.

The experience also served as a bridge between her past and present. Two years prior, while seven and a half months pregnant, Alexia had dived in the Bahamas with the same underwater videographer, David Langlois. Reuniting for this project highlighted her evolution as both a diver and a mother.

Returning to the Surface

Emerging from the depths, Alexia was greeted by Leone’s outstretched hand. At that moment, she realized the significance of her journey. Not just for herself, but for her son. She had demonstrated that adventure doesn’t end with motherhood; it transforms and deepens.

The Role of the Outlander PHEV

Throughout their expedition, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV proved to be more than just transportation. Its spacious interior accommodated all their equipment, while its advanced features provided safety and comfort. The vehicle’s performance allowed Alexia to focus on the experience, knowing she had a reliable partner on the road.
